Questo avvertimento che troviamo sulle nostre strade quando si fanno tortuose e serie, potrebbe servire anche per la vita di ogni giorno. La velocità è diventata il grande valore del nostro tempo.
Sarebbe bello che questa velocità nascesse dalla scoperta di una meta bellissima e desiderabile che appare seducente ai nostri occhi. In realtà non è così; se si chiedesse verso dove stanno correndo così in fretta, ben pochi ti saprebbero rispondere. La velocità da sola giustifica la scelta della strada; ormai non si vede quasi nessuno che percorre sentieri solitari o strade che si inerpicano verso la cima di montagne.
Ma lasciamo l’immagine per arrivare al senso di queste brevi riflessioni. Si vuol parlare della necessità e della salubrità del silenzio e della sosta.
Bisogna sapersi fermare, senza la vergogna e la paura dell’immensa folla che ti supera da ogni parte. Ti devi fermare se vuoi sapere dove stai andando; bisogna ribaltare il noto proverbio e dire: ‘Chi non si ferma è perduto’. Una delle necessità più impellenti, e condizione previa per una crescita verso una vita umana matura e piena, è quella di costruire uno ‘stile di vita’ equilibrato dove accanto al cammino ci sia la sosta e accanto alla parola ci sia il silenzio.
Solo il silenzio nutre le ‘anime grandi’: non c’è crescita senza silenzio. Perchè il silenzio è così importante? Immaginiamo una gita in montagna in una giornata piena di luce e trasparente; arrivati sulla cima si apre un panorama grandissimo e lo sguardo si spinge fino agli estremi confini. Si scoprono, così, realtà che neppure era possibile immaginare.
La stessa cosa avviene nel silenzio: esso è il compagno quotidiano delle persone ‘grandi’ perché permette una robusta crescita spirituale. Il silenzio fa ’misurare il tempo’, a cui viene dato un nome e un contenuto. La vita viene vissuta in profondità e il tempo è carico di forza e di gioia. Tutti intuiamo la differenza tra un tempo ‘trascorso’ e il tempo ‘vissuto’. Chi conosce e ama il silenzio ha i movimenti lenti e misurati; sembra, a volte, distratto ma è solo immerso nelle cose e, così, ciascuna è riconosciuta nella sua forma. L’ansia di fare sta permeando tutta la nostra vita, da quella pubblica a quella privata. Non esiste altra progettualità che quella del ‘fare’ e ‘fare in fretta’; il perché, il come, e con quale prospettiva del futuro, sembrano non interessare a nessuno. Il silenzio aiuta il passaggio dallo spazio al tempo, cioè dall’avere all’essere.
Qual è il dono più grande che fa il silenzio a coloro che hanno il coraggio di viverlo? E’ la virtù dell’attenzione, cioè la capacità di vedere ciò che quelli che vanno di corsa non potranno mai vedere e di gustare la gioia inebriante che nasce dalla scoperta delle profondità della vita. E’ ovvio che il silenzio diventa, in questo modo, l’amico fedele e giornaliero di coloro che passano gran parte della propria giornata studiando, cioè amando la realtà senza lasciarsi ‘distrarre’ da nulla.
Resta un’ultima cosa da aggiungere per non lasciare in pasto alla retorica tutte queste belle parole: il silenzio non è facile e va cercato con perseveranza come una cosa tra le più preziose della vita. Il silenzio, infatti non è il vuoto; il vuoto fa paura, il silenzio, invece, consola e tranquillizza. Il silenzio è un dono dello Spirito santo e, nello stesso tempo, una ricerca faticosa e metodica operata da una scelta libera. Nella tradizione educativa e spirituale del cristianesimo il silenzio ha una posizione preminente, al punto che molti cristiani scelgono di farlo compagno di tutta la vita. A tutti i cristiani la tradizione ha consegnato la pratica degli ‘esercizi spirituali’ come una importante occasione per ‘esercitarsi’ nel fare silenzio. E’ praticamente impossibile imparare il silenzio solo con ‘piccoli esercizi quotidiani’; questi diventano possibili solo con il coraggio di trascorre periodi lunghi nel silenzio. Il silenzio diventa ‘abito normale’, cioè virtù, solo dopo essersi esercitati per un tempo non piccolo.
